Through the Storm
The Light of Life
Read John 8:12; 10:10; Ephesians 1:15-23; 1 Peter 2:9.
When we learn to follow Jesus, we possess and enjoy the Light of Life. This speaks of every single aspect of vibrant spiritual life that flows to us through the covenant blood of Jesus.
One of the special attributes of blood is the way it circulates throughout the whole body, delivering essential substances like oxygen and nutrients to the body’s cells. It also transports waste products away from those same cells.
There is no substitute for blood. It cannot be made or manufactured; it alone is responsible for carrying the message of life to every vital organ, muscle, cell and minute tendril of body tissue. Without blood no living being could survive.
Essentially this is the message of the Cross: without the covenant blood of Jesus, we are dead in our sins, living under a veil of spiritual darkness which covers our thoughts, emotions, choices, behaviour and all other parts of our beings, inside and out. Meeting Jesus changes everything.
Just like turning on the light in a darkened room suddenly illuminates and changes the whole atmosphere, when we see Jesus our spiritual eyes perceive Him clearly as genuine Truth; the darkness in our hearts is suddenly exposed for what it is and dispersed as we lay hold of the power of the Cross and begin to apply it.
While the significance of the Cross should remain central in the life of every believer, many Christians never grow beyond understanding their personal salvation. Truly there is more; much more. There is a whole host of life-giving and life-enhancing spiritual equivalents of oxygen, nutrients and proteins that are freely given to us through the blood of Jesus.
We are not only covenant friends with God but heirs of a great spiritual inheritance that, when properly understood, gives us the potential to live an abundant supernatural life. ‘Abundance’ speaks of a profusion of fruit, so once we gain a grasp of just how great a change the blood of Jesus has bought for us, we will truly glow from the inside out with Spirit-fuelled joy and peace. These are the outward signs to others that we are carriers of the Light of Life.

Prayer Time
The word translated in Ephesians 2:10 as ‘workmanship’ – poiema - implies that we are akin to a special piece of work sculpted or painted by a great artist; something that is put on display so that those who see it can admire the artist’s skill and handiwork. Meditate on this.
