Even the Demons Tremble in Fear 

Truth and authority to be found in God, not the world’s false religions

When our church hosted hustings some time ago, an indigenous white pagan Briton sat next to me and started a brief conversation.

Paganism and secularism

He declared that Christianity was baloney because paganism was the original religion and so paganism will supersede Christianity. Once again, I was alerted to the prevalence of paganism and witchcraft in Britain. By secret societies, by atomized smartphone nerds and by mass movements, all over the place right now, false gods are worshipped. Almighty God is not pleased. Judgement must be expected. There is a lot to repent of.
 
The so-called Enlightenment romanticised both classical Greek and indigenous paganism. Powerful pagan spiritual influences have consequently been dismissed as mere superstition, but have been hidden in plain sight ever since.  Sceptical, rational materialists have become economically successful. Ignorance of the spiritual battle between God and the devil, and lack of true compassion and righteous understanding for the suffering of ordinary people and their families, begat the French Revolution, which instead extolled a secular utopian goal of liberty, equality and fraternity.

Once again, I was alerted to the prevalence of paganism and witchcraft in Britain. 

Subsequent disorder begat institutional ‘care’ for vagrants, criminals and invalids in workhouses, prisons and hospitals, which categorised, institutionalised and managed human difficulties and problems but did little truly to heal them.  Socialism arose for the material betterment of society. Then the veneer of Christendom was devastated by two World Wars, which were full of demons.

Since then, we have trusted in science, including manipulative psychological science, in the belief that ‘progressive’ benefits would ensue. Utopian materialist ideologies of multicultural communism and technocracy are now being foisted upon us. Our borders are disappearing. The West is invaded by an alarming number of Muslims owing allegiance to Allah.

Nimrod and sin

It has now become patently obvious that Allah, proclaimed by Islam to be ‘Almighty God’, is not the Almighty God of Israel, Father of Messiah Jesus. The threat to totally annihilate Israel by 2028 is taken seriously. The jihad and taqiyya (lying), and the ghoulish cruelty, cunning deception and false accusations perpetrated internationally by Islamist diehards, are reminiscent of descriptions of Nimrod and, later, of Amalek.
 
Most Bibles describe Nimrod as “a mighty hunter before the Lord” who built Babylon and Nineveh (Gen 10:8-9). The Good News Bible describes him as “the world’s first great conqueror,” which is more in keeping with the description of him on many websites (e.g. https://christiananswers.net) and elsewhere as a hunter of people, a depraved conqueror against the Lord, a ruthless tyrant who deceived, stole, killed, murdered and destroyed. He has even been described as “the mighty vanquisher of YHWH.”

And although there are many regular Muslims who just want to live in peace, many of them could probably be radicalised easily.

Abram’s calling

God took Abram out of that culture. Over four thousand years ago, he listened to the Creator of the universe, who became Israel’s God and Father of Jesus Christ. God said to him, “Leave your country, your people and your father’s household and go to the land I will show you.” (Gen 12:1.)

By the grace of God, Abram found the faith to act on God’s command (Gen 11:31), and God gave him the land that is now named Israel for him and his descendants after him in perpetuity. Yet even after God changed his name to Abraham, indicating that He would make him the father of many nations (Gen 17:3-8), he was always a stranger in this world (Gen 21:34, etc.), as Jews and real Christians are to this day (John 17:13-19).
  
Names have changed as cultures have changed, but the demonic spirits have not changed. Nimrod’s name (Gen 10:8) became Ninno or Nunno, then Nin, and then, perhaps conflated with the Chaldee Shngh (to gaze), it became Sin, which my history book tells me was the name of the moon god worshipped by the people of Ur and Haran in the Chaldees, whom Abram came away from.

Abraham was always a stranger in this world, as Jews and real Christians are to this day.

As the sun was worshipped then as the giver of life, so the moon, at which we gaze, represented death. Perhaps that explains the image of the crescent moon above mosques. Furthermore, a crescent moon placed sideways on top of an image of a head can resemble a head with two horns, which could explain how the devil’s head is portrayed with two horns.

Influence of paganism

There is historical evidence that the culture of Nimrod and the old Babylonian religion spread across the world in ancient times. It has been found among the ancient Celts and Scandinavians and in the Americas.¹ That old paganism has been a profound influence in most other religions. From fairy tales to computer games in the cultures of the West today, those same demonic influences are still very much alive under the authority of the prince of this world (John 16:11). Many, if not most, of the people amongst whom we live are sympathetic to them. Furthermore, people’s raw emotions and logical reasoning are no longer tempered these days by coming under the authority of Christendom nor, commonly, by having been given personally to Jesus and healed.
 
The godly inheritance of Abraham’s descendants was ordained by God to be spiritual rather than transferred through the blood line (Gen 22, Deut 32:20, etc.). Ishmael was sent away (Gen 21:11-14) and so were the children whom Abraham had by Keturah (Genesis 25:6). Despite many Muslims being inheritors of the bloodline, Islam is not an Abrahamic faith (1 Cor 15:50). Despite circumcision of the flesh, they do not have circumcision of the heart (Deut 10:16, Gal 5:2). God ordained that the inheritance He was offering was through Isaac, not Ishmael. God was faithful and gave Abraham’s godly descendants the land that is now named Israel.

True authority

Through Joel and Paul, God has made it clear that, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved” (Joel 2:32, Rom 10:13) and has given His promise that all Israel shall be saved for eternal life (Rom 11:26). This will mean coming to the Father through their brother Jesus, His only begotten Son (Rom 10:4), whom the remnant of Israel will eventually accept en masse (Zech 12:10). Abram believed God, and God has indeed credited that to him, and to his faithful descendants, as righteousness (Gen 15:6, Hab 2:4, Rom 4).
 
The weapons of our warfare are divinely powerful for destroying strongholds (2 Cor 10:4). We must carefully allow the Lord to equip us to see and do what Almighty God is doing in us and amongst us. Demons are not impressed by appeasement or diplomacy. They only respond to authority, which is ultimately spiritual (John 19:11a). Demons always know that Jesus Christ is Lord. They fear when He really is Lord; but they always know when actually he is not ("Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are you?" - Acts 19:15).
 
We do not accept wickedness. God will deliver us out of the hand of those who are wicked (Ps 97:10, 1 Thess 4).
