When Purim and War Converge

Israel, Persia, America and the Prophetic Clock of God

Purim

Introduction

There are moments in history when events unfold with such symbolic precision that those of us who know Scripture feel a deep stirring in our spirit. These moments seem to transcend ordinary geopolitics. They feel appointed, kairos moments.

The convergence of conflict involving Israel, rising hostility from Iran (ancient Persia) and the alignment of events with biblical festivals such as Purim forces believers to ask whether we are witnessing more than coincidence. We are witnessing patterns.

Scripture teaches that God operates according to ‘appointed times’; the Hebrew word for which - moedim - is used not only for festivals but also for divine encounters. God has a calendar.

Throughout Israel’s history, war and deliverance have often intersected with that calendar. To understand the present hour, we must look backward, to Purim, to Babylon, to Israel’s wars and to the prophetic promises recorded in the Book of Esther, Daniel, Ezekiel and Revelation. Because history does not move randomly. It moves toward fulfilment.

Purim & a Median King

Purim commemorates one of the most dramatic deliverances in biblical history. In the Book of Esther, the Jewish people were scattered throughout the Babylonian Empire, which included Media and parts of Persia. They were vulnerable, having no military protection and being entirely dependent on the Babylonian political system. Into this environment arose Haman, a child of Amalek, a descendant of Agag. Haman was not merely prejudiced, he was genocidal.

Throughout Israel’s history, war and deliverance have often intersected with that calendar.

He persuaded Astyages, the Median regent (ruling during the seven-year season of madness of his brother-in-law Nebuchadnezzar) to authorise the extermination of every Jew; man, woman and child.  This was not war; it was annihilation. Yet God intervened, not through armies, but through providence. Through Queen Esther’s courage and Mordecai’s faithfulness, Haman was exposed; His power collapsed and the Jews were delivered.

Purim became the memorial of that deliverance. It represents more than a historical rescue; it represents a prophetic pattern. A power rises to the northeast of Jerusalem. A ruler seeks Israel’s destruction. God intervenes and Haman falls while Israel rises. This is a pattern that has echoed through the centuries. In more recent times, a power has again risen to the northeast of Jerusalem, once again dedicated to Israel's destruction.

Media Then, Iran Now: The Continuity of Geography and Spirit

Modern Iran occupies the territory of ancient Media and Persia. This is not symbolic, it is geographical continuity. It was the same land that produced Astyages, a man who fell with Nebuchadnezzar, a man who had sought to destroy his grandson Cyrus at birth (Cyrus went on to declare Israel’s right to return.) It was the same land that nurtured Haman, who sought to destroy Israel.

Throughout Scripture, Persia has played a complex role - sometimes as a protector, sometimes as an adversary.
The prophet Daniel served under Persian rulers, yet he also foresaw future conflicts involving Persia. In Daniel 10, he describes a spiritual entity called the ‘Prince of Persia’, a spiritual power influencing earthly kingdoms. This reveals a crucial biblical principle: earthly conflicts often reflect deeper spiritual realities. Empires rise and fall on earth, but spiritual forces influence history. This does not remove human responsibility, but it reveals that history unfolds on multiple levels.

Israel’s Modern Wars and their Alignment with God’s Appointed Times

One of the most astonishing patterns in modern history is how frequently Israel’s wars align with biblical festivals. This pattern deserves careful examination.

Throughout Scripture, Persia has played a complex role - sometimes as a protector, sometimes as an adversary.

The War of Independence (1948); Israel declared independence on May 14, 1948. This occurred during the counting of the Omer (Sefirat HaOmer), the 49-day (seven-week) period between Passover and Shavuot. Passover commemorates deliverance from Egypt. Israel’s rebirth as a nation occurred in that same redemptive season. A nation was born in the season of deliverance. This was not merely political; it was prophetic fulfilment.

The Six-Day War (1967): In June 1967, Israel fought the Six-Day War, during which Israel regained control of East Jerusalem and the Temple Mount. This occurred just days before Shavuot, which commemorates the giving of the Law on Mount Sinai, thus representing covenant. The restoration of Jerusalem – when Jerusalem returned to Jewish control occurred in the season of covenant remembrance.

The Yom Kippur War (1973) Attack: This alignment was even more precise. On October 6, 1973, Israel was attacked on Yom Kippur - Tishrei 10 in the Hebrew calendar. Yom Kippur is the holiest day of the Jewish calendar; the Day of Atonement, a day of repentance, fasting and spiritual reflection. Israel was attacked on its holiest day. This was not random timing, but was deliberately chosen by its enemies because Israel would on that day be spiritually focused and militarily vulnerable.  Yet Israel survived, survival once again following the sacred pattern.

The October 7, 2023 Attack: On October 7, 2023, Israel was attacked during Simchat Torah - Tishrei 22. Simchat Torah celebrates the completion and restarting of the Torah reading cycle. It is a day of joy; to be spent celebrating God’s Word. The attack came on a day celebrating God’s covenant. Yet even in tragedy, the pattern continues.  Israel suffers; Israel endures; Israel survives.

Conflicting Views

Not everyone, of course, will agree with my theory of correlation between Israel’s modern wars and its biblical feasts. Some will point to the fact that the most significant of Israel’s wars – the 1948 war of independence - happened neither during Passover nor Shavuot – but rather, in the interval between them; and that the 6-day war (1967) occurred prior to Shavuot. If God was in all this, they would say, the timing would be more exact – perfect even.

If God was in all this, they would say, the timing would be more exact – perfect even.

Such people would also note that it was Israel’s enemies who deliberately timed their invasion, at times, to coincide with Israel’s holy days – when the people would be ill-prepared for war. They would conclude that the timing of these wars seems to have been more coincidental.

Maybe they’re right. I certainly respect such viewpoint, but would maintain that there does appear to be some degree of alignment in the above examples. As Keynes would say, “It’s better to be roughly right than precisely wrong.”

America and Israel: The Covenant Alignment of Nations

The alliance between the United States of America and Israel is often viewed politically. But Scripture suggests deeper dimensions. God made a covenant with Abraham: “Whoever blesses Israel will be blessed” (Genesis 12). Throughout history, nations that protected Israel often prospered. Those that sought Israel’s destruction often declined.

America has consistently aligned itself with Israel. This does not mean America is perfect. But it does suggest alignment with God’s covenant purposes. In Scripture, God often raises allies to protect Israel. Persia itself once protected Israel under Cyrus. Today, America plays that role. History repeats, but with new players.

Ezekiel’s Prophecy: Persia in the Last Days

The prophet Ezekiel wrote of a future war involving Israel. He specifically named Persia as part of a coalition. Ezekiel describes a massive confrontation in the latter days, with God intervening directly and Israel surviving while its enemies collapse. This prophecy has never been fully fulfilled, and many scholars believe it describes events still ahead. However, the presence of modern Iran as Israel’s primary regional adversary aligns precisely with Ezekiel’s prophecy.

The Return of Jesus Christ and the Final Gathering

Jesus warned that before His return, the world would experience wars, rumours of wars, and nation rising against nation. These are not random events. I would suggest, rather, that they are birth pains - and birth pains increase in intensity and frequency. They signal approaching transformation.

Jesus also said Jerusalem would be central to end-times events. Today, Jerusalem stands at the centre of global attention. While this was unthinkable as little as a century ago, now it defines global politics. Prophecy is moving toward fulfilment.

Purim as Prophetic Template for the End

Purim reveals a prophetic pattern that may extend to the end of the age, because in Purim:
  1. A ruler seeks Israel’s destruction.
  2. The plan advances.
  3. At the last moment, reversal occurs.
  4. The enemy falls.
  5. Israel survives.
Jesus also said Jerusalem would be central to end-times events.

This pattern appears repeatedly in history, and Scripture suggests it will appear again before Christ’s return.

Why God Preserves Israel

Israel’s survival defies historical probability. It is a small nation that is surrounded by adversaries. It has fought repeated wars; some commentators would say it has fought an unending war since its founding. Despite unrelenting opposition, and being surrounded by enemies who massively outnumber them, its survival continues.

Scripture explains why. God made an eternal covenant, which means that Israel’s survival is not based solely on military strength it is rooted in a divine promise. Again, this does not mean Israel is beyond criticism, but it does mean that it has a prophetic role.

The Church’s Role in this Prophetic Hour

In a moment such as this the Church is called to watch and pray. We need to be a discerning people, not speculative, but ensuring we are spiritually alert. Jesus commanded watchfulness because history is moving toward His return. And we need to be a people that chooses to bless Israel.

The Convergence of all Things

Today we are witnessing convergence and alignment. Israel is restored as a nation with Jerusalem as its capital. Persia is rising again. Global alignment is forming. Wars are aligning with prophetic geography. These patterns point towards culmination.

Jesus Christ will return, not as the suffering servant, but as our King.

This is not chaos, although I believe chaos is the adversary’s goal. Rather, this is the conclusion.

The King Is Coming

Purim reminds us that God reverses impossible situations. Israel’s wars remind us that survival follows divine promise. Prophecy reminds us that history has direction. And Scripture reminds us that history has an ending. Jesus Christ will return, not as the suffering servant, but as our King.

The same God who delivered Israel from Haman; the same God who preserved Israel through empires, still reigns. His clock is moving. The patterns are aligning.

The King is coming.

Amen
