Psalm 2: When the Nations Rage (2026 and Israel)

nations rage

Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain?” (Psalm 2:1, ESV)

As 2026 continues to unfold, the discerning Christian cannot help but sense that the world is once again aligning itself just as Scripture foretold. Political, cultural, and spiritual currents are converging, not randomly, but recognisably. Psalm 2 feels less like a metaphor and more like diagnosis.

At the centre of this raging stands Israel, just as she has stood at the centre of God’s redemptive purposes since Genesis 12.

Israel: The Immovable Stone

God declared through the prophet Zechariah:

I will make Jerusalem a cup of trembling unto all the people round about… and a burdensome stone for all people: all that burden themselves with it shall be cut in pieces.” (Zech 12:2-3)

Israel’s re-emergence, survival, and continued controversy remain one of the strongest evidences of biblical prophecy in motion. No other nation occupies such disproportionate global attention.

No other nation occupies such disproportionate global attention.

In 2026, Israel is once again at the centre of diplomatic pressure, UN resolutions, protest movements, and media obsession, particularly concerning Gaza, but now also Iran.

Gaza, President Trump’s Peace Plan, and the Counsel of Kings

President Donald Trump’s Gaza Peace Plan and 'Board of Peace', framed as pragmatic diplomacy and regional stabilisation, has been praised by some and denounced by others. Yet Psalm 2 reminds us:

The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against YHWH, and against His Anointed.” (Psalm 2:2)

Peace plans that bypass God’s covenant purposes, reduce Israel to a negotiable inconvenience, or treat land promised by God as merely geopolitical real estate echo ancient errors. Joel warns:

I will enter into judgment… for my heritage Israel, whom they have scattered among the nations, and divided my land.” (Joel 3:2)

History shows that every attempt to 'solve' the Israel question apart from God ends not in peace, but escalation.

God’s Response to Global Defiance

Psalm 2 does not describe a frantic God reacting to chaos. It describes a God who laughs.

He who sits in the heavens laughs; YHWH holds them in derision.” (Psalm 2:4)

In 2026, this derision seems visible as human systems strain under their own weight. As well as man-made solutions to the question of Israel, global defiance manifests in various ways. Among them are the following:

  • Cultural Defiance: From the Sacred to the Spectacle

The Paris Olympics opening ceremony in 2024, celebrated by many as progressive expression, struck others as a deliberate mockery of Christian symbolism and moral order. Such public inversion recalls Isaiah’s warning:

Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil.” (Isaiah 5:20)

What once would have been unthinkable is now applauded on the world stage. This is not merely cultural drift, it is civilisational rebellion.

  • Western Alignment with the East

Simultaneously, Western nations increasingly align economically, technologically, and diplomatically with China, a power openly hostile to religious freedom and a biblical worldview.

Scripture warned ancient Israel repeatedly against trusting foreign powers:

Woe to them that go down to Egypt for help.” (Isaiah 31:1)

Today’s “Egypt” may look like trade dependency, technological reliance, or ideological convergence, but the principle remains unchanged.

  • Surveillance, Control, and the Architecture of Compliance

The rapid expansion of digital surveillance, cashless systems, and data-driven governance has accelerated. Concepts like 15-minute neighbourhoods, presented as sustainability initiatives, also raise profound questions about mobility, control, and consent.

John foresaw a system where buying and selling would be regulated (Revelation 13:17). While 2026 is not the fulfilment of that prophecy, the infrastructure is being normalised.

Prophecy often unfolds not in sudden leaps, but in preparatory steps.

  • Identity Politics and Fragmentation

Modern identity politics has replaced shared moral foundations with endlessly competing grievances. Scripture warned of this fragmentation:

Every man did that which was right in his own eyes.” (Judges 21:25)

When identity supersedes truth, unity collapses. The gospel unites Jew and Gentile in Christ (Ephesians 2:14), yet modern ideologies divide relentlessly.

When identity supersedes truth, unity collapses.

  • Education, Faith, and Religious Drift

Across Western education systems, Christianity is increasingly marginalised while other religious perspectives receive protected or preferential treatment. This is not an attack on people, but a shift in cultural authority.

Jesus warned:

They shall put you out of the synagogues… whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service.” (John 16:2)

Persecution often begins as exclusion.

  • Food, Fellowship, and Social Engineering

Policies influencing food supply, agricultural reduction, and the decline of public houses and communal spaces subtly reshape society. The erosion of fellowship, both secular and sacred, weakens communal resistance to control.

The early Church thrived on shared tables (Acts 2:46). Isolation serves power.

  • Nations in the Streets, and the UN’s Voice

Public demonstrations across Europe and beyond reveal restless populations, while United Nations statements increasingly frame national borders, sovereignty, and biblical moral claims as obstacles to progress.

Yet Psalm 2 speaks directly to international institutions:

Be wise now therefore, O ye kings… serve YHWH with fear.” (Psalm 2:10-11)

  • Immigration and the Shaking of Nations

Mass migration has created humanitarian need, cultural tension, and political instability. Scripture affirms care for the stranger (Leviticus 19:34), yet also affirms borders and order (Acts 17:26).

When compassion is weaponised against wisdom, chaos follows.

Christ Still Reigns from Zion

Despite the rage, God declares:

Yet have I set my King upon my holy hill of Zion.” (Psalm 2:6)

Zion is not incidental. Israel is not replaceable. The Church does not supersede God’s promises but is grafted into them (Romans 11).

Jesus will return to Jerusalem (Zechariah 14:4). History is moving toward a fulfilment that is not just spiritual, but geographical and literal.

A Final Warning and Hope

Psalm 2 ends with mercy:

Kiss the Son, lest He be angry… Blessed are all who put their trust in Him.”     (Psalm 2:12)

The events of 2026 may reflect God’s disdain for rebellious systems, but also His patience. Judgment is delayed because grace is still extended.

The world shakes because it is built on sand. The Kingdom of God cannot be shaken.

The Church must not rage with the nations, nor retreat in fear. We are called to watch, pray, and testify.

The world shakes because it is built on sand. The Kingdom of God cannot be shaken.

Even so, come, Lord Jesus.” (Revelation 22:20)
